What is cents per point (cpp)?

Cpp is (cash price − taxes/fees) ÷ points used × 100. It tells you, in cents, what each point is worth in this specific redemption.

It depends on the program. Chase, Amex, and Capital One transferable points typically aim for 1.5¢+ via airline/hotel transfer partners. Issuer portals are usually 1.0–1.5¢. Cash back, gift cards, and statement credits are usually 0.5–1.0¢ and rarely the smart move.

How do I read a 'borderline' verdict?

Borderline means your cpp is close to your floor but not clearly above the program baseline. Use points if cash is tight, the points are about to expire, or the cash booking has poor change/refund rules. Otherwise hold for a stronger redemption.

Why warn me when cpp looks very high (the high-cpp mirage)?

A very high cpp often comes from an inflated cash fare on a peak date or scarce route. If no real person would actually pay that price, the 'savings' aren't real either. Compare a similar cash fare on a nearby date before booking.

When is a low cpp still rational?

When your budget is tight, the points are about to expire, the cash booking has poor change/refund rules, or you have no better redemption in sight. The calculator flags this so you don't dismiss a useful redemption out of dogma.
